TRYOUTS!! This Saturday, 1/11/14, and Make-up Information
Greetings — This is a long email, so please read the entire note regarding tryouts. Also, please keep an eye out for emails the remainder of the week — we do not expect any changes, but if there are some we will email and post on the website.
Tryouts are this Saturday, January 11th at Polytechnic School (Poly) — 1030 E. California Blvd (Allendale is currently being reseeded).
Make-up tryout info is at bottom of this email (and they are held at a different location).
We are a happy, friendly League, but we must have tryouts as we need to put teams together (and for older players for AAA and Majors, there is a formal draft by Managers for team parity — drafts take place a week or two after tryouts).
Tryouts are age-based. You must have your player show up at the assigned times noted below. Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign-in. Have your player wear cleats, bring a glove and bat, baseball pants, and batting HELMET. If your player is 7 or younger, he/she can certainly wear sneakers, but if 8 years of age or older, the player should be geared up. If the player signed-up for T-Ball AND is 5 or younger, there are NO tryouts.
Note: For those trying out early morning, it will be cold, so a sweat-top or pull-over is suggested.
At sign-in, your player will be given an assigned number. Also, when arriving, please be patient as tryouts can run behind schedule.
Age/Residency verification will happen at sign-in too (if you haven’t done so already). Some of you already did this back in December (at Blair HS) so you are set and we have a record of that.
Instructions for Residency Proof (either Home residency or School Residency) are on our website homepage on the left side under “Links”. You may send questions regarding Residency to League President David Mathias firstname.lastname@example.org .
Age residency for now is just a copy of your player’s birth certificate.
Why do we need Age/Residency verification? For AAA and Majors, there are All-Stars and Tournament games where players MUST be the ages they say they are and in the correct Divisions, and families must live or have their player in a school within our boundaries. Little League International also would like AA players to verify as well. So essentially like other Leagues, we verify everyone.
What happens at tryouts? For most player groups, we are literally seeing how well players throw the ball, catch the ball, take grounders, and hit the ball. For older players (those trying out for AAA or Majors), an assessment is also made for those who wish to pitch. Speed of running the bases is also assessed. Tryouts for AAA and Majors are more active (harder-hit and pitched balls), while for younger players its a bit more easy going.
Your player will want to come equipped with their gear, and with a relaxed attitude. Remind your player there is no need to be nervous — these tryouts are just to help us figure out teams — so they should come on out and show off their skills no matter what skill level.
